The college football season is here in earnest. Can the state follow Gamecocksâ lead?
Jacksonville State was a winner last week, getting the state’s six FBS teams off to a strong start. In their first game in the sport’s top division, the Gamecocks beat UTEP, exceeding the expectations of the betting public.
It’s a real possibly the state could go undefeated again this Saturday. Let’s get into the picks.
UMass at Auburn (-35): It is a credit to the Auburn fan base that there is so much excitement about this season and this opening game. Auburn fans are so happy to be back to pulling in the same direction even if the roster is not yet at a championship level. Cadillac Williams started the return to excitement last season when he took over for Bryan Harsin at mid-season. Hugh Freeze’s recruiting success and clear desire to be at Auburn has renewed the energy on The Plains.
UMass is not the worst team in college football like many people predicted. With 27 good transfers, the Minutemen have greatly upgraded their roster from a year ago. Still, Auburn should roll. Auburn 34-14
Middle Tennessee at Alabama (-39): The theme of the offseason has been that Alabama is going to be tougher and more dominant, especially on the offensive line. Middle Tennessee is a perfect opponent to prove if that’s true.
The Tide will play more than one quarterback, with Jalen Milroe expected to get the start. But the quarterback battle won’t be settled this week. But the attitude and demeanor of this Alabama team should be on display. Alabama 41-7
